| Excellent Point Kid in regards to diving back in the 70's and 80's versus today. I am a personal example of having the opportunity of experiencing the absolute awe of diving back then versus conditions now even in the same places. No wonder I get bored diving so often. Just last year, I went on a trip to Cavilli, Balesterra and Arena all located in the isolated north sulu sea between Palawan (noth, south and west) and Mindoro/Iloilo . This was pretty much in the middle of nowwhere. Even way out there large sectionss of the reef were dynamited out. I did see lots of beautiful soft and hard corals but NO FISH and any big fish were down at least 50 meters. I can only imagine this place 30 ears ago. Garbonzo even made a point of referencing a place near Jeddah Saudi Arabia we both were so fortunate to have dived which has now been removed off the face of the Earth. Perhaps that was one of the greatest places ever on the planet and now it is gone forever. You would truly have to have dived there to have even a remote clue as to what I am saying. Perhaps this is why I find amusing this discussion on best Places and bio diversity. I would venture to say even in humility that most here on this forum (based on what posts I have seen) don't have a freakin clue of great diving places relatively speaking. Of course there are exceptions and I apologize to them. In this regard I reference that APO Island in my mind is a shit hole. Even by todays standards I can't imagine anypart of it should be considered a top 10 diving destination. Yea I'm an arrogant fuck but too bad. I like this no holds bar forum we have now he he he |

| You are so lucky Melvin. I always wanted to do that. Check this out. Sounds like fun. Courtesy of Daily Telegraph Feb 16, 2007 Man wrestles shark drunk A MAN who caught a 1.3-meter (4-ft.) shark with his bare hands off an Australian beach said on Friday he only tried the feat because he was drunk on vodka. Phillip Kerkhof was fishing off a jetty at Louth Bay, a town on South Australia state's Eyre Peninsula 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) west of Sydney, when he spotted the bronze whaler shark swimming in the shallows, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported. "I just snuck up behind him, and eventually I went for the big grab and I fluked it and got him," Kerkhof said. "He was just thrashing around in the water ... starting to turn around and try to bite me and I thought 'well, it's amazing what vodka does'," Kerkhof said. The shark bit a hole in Kerkhof's jeans, but he was uninjured. "It's not something I'd recommend to do. When I sobered up I thought about it and I said, 'I'm a bit of an idiot for doing it'," Kerkhof said. Many species of sharks are common in Australian waters, and there are an average of 15 shark attacks per year in the country - roughly one person each year is killed by a shark. Last month, an abalone diver had an incredible escape after being almost swallowed head first by a huge shark off the New South Wales state coast. |
