Thanks for the posting. I had missed the news reports on this one. The "freak accident" story is simply bullshit. There is no such thing! The real reasons are revealed further along in the article. Try:

"Maritime accidents are common in the Philippine archipelago due to tropical weather, badly maintained passenger boats and weak enforcement of safety regulations"

The latter two being the most operative reasons for such tragedies occurring.

A ferry capsizing and killing 39 people only is not even newsworthy enough for the Philippine media to take notice.

Default There is an update on this.

Forty-two people were killed and nine others are missing. The authorities are now holding the captain and looking for the owner, but with no great surprise the owner is missing. The Ship was overloaded and was operating illegally and the ferry was carrying 151 passengers and crew but only 119 on the manifest. Will this daily corruption ever stop how many people have to die before something is done?

Educate me a bit on this one please. I'm a poor, simple, naive soul who perhaps spent (too) many years in the transportation business - more aviation than marine.

In a place like Canada, where I'm from, souls on board a conveyance are all accounted for. SOBs = passengers + crew.

Am I to believe that the "joiners" here are folks who paid a fare which was pocketed and thus appear on no manifest?

The mind boggles!

^-^ There were many people have died this year because of the ferry accidents how sad it is...All we can do is hope and pray for the people who always traveled a lot. And hope this kind of tragedy will never happen again...

The mind boggles!
What eludes you is simple monetary mathematics. The ferries charge by the head, and pay taxes and insurance accordingly. For those not on the manifest, they pay no taxes.

FREE MONEY!

Some of this free money may go into the pockets of the crew, as well as the employees on both sides of the water. Other parts of this free money goes into the coffers of the vessel owners.

The really sad part is, those that find theirselves on the free money part, (not on the manifest) play hell collecting on the pitance of insurance their families may be eligible for.

Capische?

Welcome to the Philippines!

Default Here we go again

SANTIAGO CITY, PHILIPPINES: The death toll in the sinking of a passenger boat off northern Cagayan on 14 Dec has increased to 44 after rescue teams recovered 14 more bodies off the Luzon Strait on Wednesday (17 Dec), At least 46 passengers survived. The boat was reportedly carrying at least 100 passengers and crewmembers when it sank.

Really, how many have to die before they do something?
