Learning tagalog, etc.?

Here's an off-the-wall question: How many of you expats have taken the time to learn the local language to the point where you can understand a conversation?

At first I thought this would be a good idea. Now I'm not so sure I want to know what they're saying about me.

I am no expat but got some basics vocabulair in tagalog, seems to be apriciated to speak it a bit, ppl spreak loads of local languages though.
