Retirement in the Philippines

Hi everyone,
I'm Roy from Almere, which is a medium city in the Netherlands about a 25 minute drive by car train from the capital city Asterdam.I live here with my wife Yvonne and two kids Sven(son) and Amber(daughter). Yvonne my wife is from the Philippines, Mindanao,Iligan city that's where we first met and also married in december 1985.I work in Holland as a senior prison officer and will retire on the age of 60, wich will be in the year 2010 in the month of february.Our plan is to try get settle in the Philippines in the city of the gentle people Dumaguete or in an other city or town close by.What I like to know is if there is someone who can help us to find our way with housing, what to do, rent or try to by if possible and maybe can inform us about the cost of life in dumaguete. We hope to hear from you if you have some valueable tips for us wich we can use in case we want to come to Negros.

There were many postings on this forum dealing with the same subjects as you ask here now.
About renting versus buying. If buying.....how to proceed. Cost of living etc..
If you have still questions you can give me your landline number in the Netherlands and I will call you once via Voipbuster or otherwise via Skype (if you have that too).
This service will be given by a retired person who lived untill 2 years ago in the best soccertown in the Netherlands , already for quite some years.
(I guess you are a supporter of that other club who tries to beat us )

Hello everyone,

Thanks everyone for your replies, however I really hoped to get some answers to my questions and so far that is not happened yet. Of course, I get a lot of useful information about living in the Philippines, but my questions still remained unanswered. I was hoping that somebody who has phyical information regarding my previous questions ( buying/renting a property, standard of living, other living costs, documents needed etc. ) for example someone who really live currently in the Philippines particularly Dumaguete, that this person could tell me about his/her experience personally. I would really appreciate it very much if you ( reader ) could help me out, so I can make further plans for my retirement/stay in the Philippines.

I would suggest that you rent for the first year. Dont sign a full year rental agreement maybe a month to month. This will get you started and from this point you will be able to decide and discover what you like best.

I am not sure on standard of living aspect. Maybe someone that is living off a pension/retirement fund can help you with this. I am still working.

Documents needed? If you wife is a Filipina then, you will need your passport and your childrens passports. I am not exactly positive but, I think that if you and your (filipina wife) have children, then, when you go through customs at the airport here in the Philippines, you will automatically get a full year or balikbayan pass. Please double check this. Also, if this is true, make sure that the customs people stamp your passport accordingly. Otherwise, they will just give you a 20 day visa and you will have to keep renewing it.
