| Hi all, I am trying to make word-for-word translation of famous "Magellan" song by Yoyoy Villame: Magellan - Yoyoy Villame - Songs & OPM Lyrics So, despite text in English, I can't understand the last string on the sentence: Magellan landed in Limasawa at noon The people met him very welcome on the shore They did not understand The speaking they have done Because Kastila gid at Waray-Waray man In this context, "Waray-Waray man" is a man speaking waray-waray language? Or "bigfoot like creature"? As quoted in: Waray-Waray language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "Kastila" - mean "a Spanish man"? Also, I don't understand a word "gid". Possible some kind of local slang? As a result, I can't catch the meaning of the last string quoted above - why they don't understand speaking? ![]() p.s. Yes, English is not my "mother tongue", especially Philippino dialect ![]()

Cebuano for horse is similar to the spanish caballo. A little more far fetched but still connected is world like dog Iro and spanish "perro". When spoken not much difference. So in a way.. knowing some basic spanish might help learning Visayan and also perhaps tagalog and other dialects. Stefan |

The last line has to do with Magellan meeting the native Filipinos. The reason why they could not understand each other is because Magellan is a Spaniard speaking Spanish (Kastila) while the natives speak "Waray-waray". "man", "gid", and "because" are equivalent while "at" is not in English here but the Tagalog for "and". So basically the last line says that One is speaking in Spanish while the other is speaking in Waray-waray. |

| Being Portuguese, I can't help making an off-topic remark: Magellan, or more correctly Magalhães, was Portuguese. In case you were just stating him being a Spaniard because of the lyrics themselves, I apologize in advance for being a smartass :P |

around 1522 he was killed by a spear at Mactan island by the warrior Lapu-Lapu together with about 18 of his crewmen. To my knowledge he went in to a fight between the island of Cebu and Mactan and got killed. So he would most likely speak spanish as well as portuguese (they are closely related languages together with other roman languages. Stefan |
