ukai, uki, ooky,oky, uky...???

Can someone please explain these "uki uki" markets ??
They sell cloths,towels,sheets,blankets,hats,bags,toys,..... .....

I was told years ago,that the goods sold were donnated in the US (like Sally Ann, St.Vincent de Paul) and the $$$ fron any sales,went towards charitable organizations.. I am all for that..
I was also told that this is all a scam....on the Philippines end, and that it is NOT a charitable moneymaker, but private...but back in the US,they believe that their donnated goods are going to help needy people....
