  1. Carl, this might have been the original column that was referenced:

Outrage - FROM THE STANDS By Domini M. Torrevillas - The Philippine Star News Opinion
  2. This is not the article I read, but it refers to the same things and is more recent:

The BUCK STOPS at CITY HALL | The Negros Chronicle - News around Dumaguete City and Negros Oriental, Philippines

Another article quoting the former Mayor...you will probably appreciate the last sentence:

    DAILY STAR: Negros Oriental

    And another article:

    Outrage | GLOBAL BALITA

I am back in Thailand now...no security guards, no bars on windows, no barbed wire, nice houses full of nice things left unattended for weeks and months at a time with no problems...nothing like Dmgte today...
  3. The numbers were from a newspaper article that another member posted on the forum. I believe the article was quoting Vice Mayor Alan Cordova who gave the statistics. I will see if I can find the article in a quick search...

Hey can you tell me where you got the info on all of the murders and robberies
  5. Carl, sorry, I never noticed this post until today. But to answer you, albeit a few months delayed, Filipinos can travel to Thailand and automatically receive a 30 day visa on arrival. (American citizens can get longer term visas from the Thai Embassy in the US...typically, up to one-year.) If a Filipino wishes to stay longer, the currently favored strategy is to go to the Thai consulate in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where they are issuing double-entry (6-month) visas for Filipinas, et al.

The cost of living in Thailand depends on your lifestyle. If you like to live fairly comfortably, I would say that Thailand is cheaper than the Philippines and the standards are higher. If you are trying to scrape by on a minimal amount, aren't bothered by Third World standards, and smoke and drink a lot, and/or gamble then the Philippines is probably the place for you. (Thailand has much higher taxes on alcohol and tobacco, and there are no casinos in Thailand.)
  6. Thanks Dong.
