Mandaue City is the "little rich city" in the Philippines. The city has been an economic center during the Spanish regime and until now Mandaue City has continued to be an economic and industry center. The Mantawi Festival of Mandaue City shows the richness of the history and heritage of the city.

Mandaue City traces its history back to the time of Ferdinand Magellan, a Spanish explorer. When Ferdinand Magellan sighted the "Cove of Cebu" that is called Mandawe, it became the Philippines' host of first facility. The industrialization of the Philippines began in Mandaue when the Acapulco Trade was sustained in the place.

Mandaue City was named after a thick, clinging vine known locally as "mantawi", which was abundant in the area at that time. Mandaue, even before the Spaniards came, was called as the "merchants' paradise". Major economic points were connected in this place.

The so-called "Cove of Cebu" became a pueblo in the years 1580 to 1700. In 1899, it became known as the town of Mandaue. In June 21, 1969, the Republic Act 5519 granted Mandaue to become a chartered city. In 1991, Mandaue City became a highly urbanized city in the Philippines.
