Located in the Visayan Region of the Republic of the Philippines, Dumaguete City is known as the City of Gentle People. The city is specifically located in the province of Negros Oriental. Dumaguete City is known for its colleges and universities. It has been labeled as “the center of learning in the south of the Philippines.” All in all, the city has seven colleges and universities, 9 secondary schools and 12 elementary schools. Dumaguete City is the home of Silliman University, the first Protestant school in the Philippines. The campus of the Silliman University spans 65 hectares. Students studying in Silliman come from different parts of the Philippines. There are also a number of foreign students in the university. In Asia, Siliman University is considered as the first university established by the Americans.
Negros Oriental State University
For students who have problems financially can opt to study in Negros Oriental State University. This university in the Philippines offers students low tuition and miscellaneous fees. Negros Oriental State University has produced competent graduates that have passed board examinations. The cultures of excellence and service are instilled in students attending the university.
A university in Dumaguete known for its participation in sporting events is the Foundation University. All courses offered by the university are accredited by national accrediting agencies in the Philippines. The university became famous when its men’s volleyball team won the National Beach Volley University Challenge.
St. Paul University
Dumaguete City is also where the first Saint Paul University in the Philippines was established.
Other learning institutions offering tertiary education in the city are AMA Computer College and Negros Maritime College Foundation Inc., the Metro Dumaguete College and Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria. AMA specializes in courses related to computer science. It is one of the biggest computer schools in the Philippines. Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria is known for the acronym COSCA.
