Negros Dive Professionals founded

January 29th, 2012 · No Comments

George P. Arnaiz, member of the House of Representatives for the second district of Negros Oriental has inducted the first officers of the newly founded Negros Dive Professionals. A small ceremony was held on Friday 27th of January 2012 at the Sidlakan Village in Dumaguete City.

George P. Arnaiz, who is a scuba diver himself, welcomed the new association officers and representatives from different Dive Resorts in Dumaguete and Dauin. The new organization is not limited to the big operators, but open to all dive-professionals of Negros Oriental.

The founding member of Negros Dive Professionals are:

Adventure Dive Shop (Mikes’s Beach Resort)
Aqualandia Resort
Atlantis Resort
Atmosphere Resort
Chris (Korean operator)
Dive Society
Diveworx
Gino Tec-Trimix Center
Liquid Dive
Lucky Dive Shop
ND Underwater Sports
Won Dive

As officers of Negros Dive Professionals were inducted:

President: Jonathan Alerre

Vice President: Patrick Bruder

Secretary: Richard Emslie

Treasurer: Glenn Carballo

Goals and plans of the group are regional search and rescue training to complement the government organizations of Negros Oriental, as well as raising the funds to repair the recompression chamber which sits unused somewhere hidden since years in Provincial Hospital. The raised funds should be also used for training of medical personal to operate the chamber.

Jonathan Alerre, President of Negros Dive Professionals, stated that 90% of the tourists visiting Negros Oriental are Dive Enthusiasts. While this number seem way to high, it is true that a significant number of visitors from outside the Philippines are into Scuba diving. If the Negros Dive Professional doesn’t die a natural death (like all tries before to unite the dive props in this area), it could make Scuba Diving in Negros Oriental and Dumaguete not only safer, but even more enjoyable.

Pulitzer-Prize Winner Edward P. Jones in Dumaguete

November 15th, 2011 · No Comments

by Emmanuel ‘Doods’ Tecson

Edward P Jones

Edward P. Jones, Pulitzer-prize winning short story writer and novelist, visited Dumaguete City last November  13-14 as part of a literary tour sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Embassy of the U.S.A. in Manila, National Book Store Philippines, and the National Book Development Board of the Philippines.

Jones won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize in fiction for his historical novel “The Known World” which plays in a fictional county in Virginia and examines issues regarding black slaves being owned by rich white and black people with strong characters in an enormous intense canvas.

He was visiting the Philippines from November 9 – 19, 2011. Dumaguete being the city host of the annual National Writer’s workshop in May, the City of Gentle People was the only Philippine city outside of Manila he visited. He was here to share his writing insights with the local literary community, i.e., at Silliman University (SU).

On the first day of his Dumaguete visit, Edward P. Jones was able to have a roundtable dialogue with 23 of the majors and faculty of the English and Literature Department of Silliman University. Afterwards, he was interviewed on cam for a local TV show and on audio for a local newspaper. Ending his first night in Dumaguete, Jones ate dinner with guests including Ian Rosales Casocot, a palanca award-winning fiction writer, and ,also, a female Creative Writing scholar from India. The dinner, which was hosted by the University President Dr. Ben S, Malayang III, was held at the Silliman University President’s House.

His second day in Dumaguete started with an press conference interview in the morning at the American section of the SU library by representatives of various local media groups: Reno Tallada of ABS-CBN, Iphraim Cabristante of DYSR-FM, Choy Gallarde of Sky Cable, Melissa Pal and Kirk Roncesvalles of The Weekly Sillimanian, and university writers Alana Narciso, Philip van Peel, L.F. Partosa, Jennifer Solitana, and Myla June Patron. He was then transported to the SU Writer’s Village on Mount Talinis for an inter-reading between a few number (approximately twenty and so) of the Dumaguete writing community, where a vibrant, inspiring and informative discussion came to transpire. At the end of the day, Jones was given a Certificate of Appreciation signed by the University president.

Pulitzer Prize winner Edward P. Jones was a big inspiration for the local creative writer community and the organizer of the National Writer’s Workshop next May in Dumaguete.

Toastmasters Dumaguete formed

November 3rd, 2011 · 9 Comments

A group of at least 20 professionals representing various sectors have formed Toastmasters Dumaguete (TMD) and formalized today its charter application with Toastmasters International.

Toastmasters is a non-profit organization with chapters across the globe that aims for the development of public speaking and leadership skills.

The idea behind the creation of TMD was sparked from a need to provide a formal venue where speech enthusiasts can share ideas through a series of communication exercises and techniques, and allow for them to enhance their interpersonal skills. Its creation was initiated by Einstein Laviña, former professor at Silliman University and now headmaster of BASE School in Amlan, who was active in Toastmasters while in Korea.

TMD, which falls under District 75 of Toastmasters International, pools together individuals from different sectors, including students, who share a common interest in learning how the marriage of words and gestures can make for an effective tool for understanding and linkages. Its initial membership includes representations from the education, business, government and media sectors.

Officers elected

Elected as its first set of officers are: Einstein Laviña (president), Cecile Genove (vice president for education), Elve Nasvik (vice president for membership), Mark Garcia (vice president for public relations), Myleen Sedillo (secretary), Rhoody Brust (treasurer) and Dondon Tingas (sergeant-at-arms).

Present during the election was DTM Melinda Sisles, Division D. governor, whose jurisdiction covers clubs in Bacolod and Iloilo, among others. TMD is the 13th club under Division D.

Toastmasters Dumaguete meets twice a month at the second floor of Casablanca Restaurant along Rizal Boulevard. Those interested are encouraged to observe and join the meeting on November 12 at 6PM
