Silliman University president Dr. Ben Malayang III reiterated recently that the Dumaguete-based school will strictly implement its campus policies for the security and benefit of students, teaching personnel, staff as well as the general public that enters the premises of the University. Dr. Malayang III referred to the policies involving the No Helmet, No Entry and the smoke and drug-free campaigns of Silliman University.
According to Dr. Malayang, he is not bothered by the criticisms concerning the university’s strict adoption of these measures, especially the one concerning the wearing of helmet inside the university premises.
The policy has stirred negative feedbacks from people who believe that it is awkward to be wearing helmets when entering the campus grounds. Crash helmets can be obtained from different access points in the campus and a motorist can lease one upon presentation of necessary identification card.
The university president made it clear that he only wants to create discipline within the university. He likewise admitted that despite the implementation of the disciplinary steps, Silliman University is not the ideal school and is still prone to criminal activities.
Dr. Malayang III said the school administration is investigating the alleged presence of Silliman University students involved in gangs in Dumaguete. Recently, altercations between members of rival gangs Cripz and Bloods were reported, resulting to some members of Bloods getting hospitalized. Bloods is an academe-based group while Cripz has out-of-school youths as members.
